Meeting Between the Chairman and the Director of UNRWA with the Minister of Interior: Toward a Partnership to Strengthen Rights and Services

The Chairman of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, Ambassador Ramez Dimechkie, and the Director of UNRWA Affairs in Lebanon, Dr. Dorothy Klaus, held a meeting with the Minister of Interior and Municipalities Ahmad Al-Hajjar, at the ministry’s headquarters. The meeting focused on key issues related to the situation of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

At the forefront of the discussion was the digital transformation project being developed by the committee, particularly the initiative to issue biometric identity cards for Palestinians. Minister Al-Hajjar expressed clear support for this project and affirmed the ministry’s full readiness to cooperate in ensuring its success. He also noted that the ministry is implementing a national digital identity project for Lebanese citizens, which could allow for the integration of both efforts within a comprehensive national digital transformation plan.

The meeting also addressed fees related to legal and judicial procedures for Palestinian refugees, with the minister expressing understanding of the challenges refugees face. He confirmed that positive decisions will soon be taken to ease these burdens, ensuring fair treatment similar to that of Lebanese citizens.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Dimechkieemphasized the importance of continuous coordination with the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities to improve the living conditions of Palestinian refugees on all levels. He noted that institutional partnership represents the most effective path toward achieving tangible progress that benefits both the Lebanese state and the Palestinian refugees.
